Idler arm changes: early to late---update 444-544

I guess I'm stumped then...

I poked my head under the '57 again after reading your last post Steve and saw this:

Then I took a closer look at the early style NOS 444 arm...

and then compared the two...

I guess someone in the last 48 years snuck a later style arm into my '57. I checked out the steering box though and it looks about right for a later 544. Hmmm. No retrofitted plates, though... Could someone have just welded new frame horns on in order to get a later 544 suspension?

According to the factory manual the PV444 steering box has a rounded shape with a big nut on top. The later PV544 has one that is square, and has a lock nut style adjuster on top. My '57 has the latter. Hmmm...

I'll keep trying to id this beast. Anybody out there have both a 444 and a 544 sitting in their workshop?

Thanks,
Aiden
