Very well could be a ground issue - but also could be the main circuit board in the instrument cluster. I have an 89 760 also, and am having trouble with fuel gauge working right. Tech pulled cluster a few days back, resoldered some leads on the board in question - commented that they often give trouble.

As it is, I may have to find me another circit board anyway - as his soldering did not do the job. I have the same prob I had, plus now my clock will not adjust. Runs, but will not ajust.

Maybe my experience will give you some ideas.
