Howdy Bruce,

A very common trouble is broken linkage bushings under the car. There are two, and when both are broken or lost, the shifter is very sloppy. I can imagine yours with the bolts loose was really sloppy. (Aren't there only three?)

When the bushings get replaced or the shifter mounting bolts tightened, there is another adjustment for the switch position. You can see it in this discussion on the backup lights: http://cleanflametrap.com/neutsw.html
