Ouch! What kind of primer did he have in mind? A gallon of Mar-Hyde high solid primer and a gallon of reducer is what I've used in the past, might not be enough for the entire thing including floors & engine bay, but still, that was only about $100. Did you get the impression he was trying to talk you out of it? In light of that, the Cal car certainly sounds like the way to go. I don't think anyone will fault you for throwing in the towel at this point...
