Can I be happy with a non turbo?

There are several highways around here where the speed limit is 80km/h (50mph), and which have long uphill grades at the beginning. Getting up to speed on these roads is no problem, but then easing off the throttle as the car approaches 80, the converter locks and drops the revs just below the point where the car can sustain its speed. Then apply more throttle to keep the speed up, and it kicks down to 3rd and jumps up to 85 or so, then back off and you get an upshift to OD + lockup, which again is too high a gear. Repeat two or three times until the end of the grade, or just disengage OD. I've played around with the kickdown cable a bit and got it dialed in a bit better but it's still a pain in some situations, to start to accelerate and suddenly lose momentum on a grade (or while trying to smoothly overtake a slower car without full-throttle kickdown out of OD). That's really splitting hairs over such a great car, I just wish the lockup point was a little bit higher, almost every secondary road here is an 80km/h speed limit.
