It also took me about 2 hours to do this job following the procedures in the FAQ. You can align the switch well enough without the factory tool using one of the alternate procedures listed there. I put the switch in the middle of the range where it turned on the backup lights. It has worked well for me since I put it in over a year ago. Also, follow the recommendations to actually move the shift lever to L occasionally, rather than just stay at P-N-D. It helps keep the contacts from crusting over due to non-use.
Good luck; it's a bit of a fiddly job, but not bad.
