I don't know what year your car is, but the early 80's Volvos have a problem with wire insulation deteriorating and crumbling away. The problem was corrected around 86 or 87 - up. I've heard that other Euro manufactures had the same issue around that time frame, but I don't know about that for sure. Some people simply replace the engine compartment wire harness with a new one, while some of the more adventursome splice in patches to replace the obviously bad portions of the harness themselves.
