If you have a long enough foot, or a brick on the floor, you can just push
the lever with your toe without the pedal (which I happen to think is long,
slim and handsome). While driving across southern Missouri in 1990 with
that problem in a 69 144 we stopped at a limestone outcrop and picked up a
rock roughly the shape of the state of Arkansas and about 1 3/4" thick.
I put it in the corner of the floor next to the tunnel (a near-perfect fit)
and it relieved my leg tension a great deal. The car is long gone (in Panama,
I imagine) but I still have the rock.
