I use Loc-Tite on the two bolts, just for good measure. Also, Volvo lowered the cam nut tightening spec to around 80 ft/lb because 100 was snapping the nose off some cams. Use Loc-Tite on that too...

If both sides of the retaining plate are smooth, that's fine. I don't have any insights into the knocking at the moment, sorry.
