Sit on it.

The job is definitely easier with the seat out of the car and placed on a table. There is no need to take any stitches out, the seat back has an opening at the bottom, held together by hog rings. Replace the hog rings with zip ties when reassembling. Tony has described the Seat Rebuild Procedure with text and photos here: http://home.no.net/ebrox/
