A puzzlement concerning replacement wiring 444-544

Re-reading your question, you can have 12v if you are still connected to the battery directly. Your alternator is connected to the battery at the solinoid and perhaps your ammeter is also directly connected to the battery (+) terminal. You should have a circuit that your key turns on that brings 12v to the coil and the solinoid (the starter always has 12v because the promary cables connect AT the solinoid). Your key should bring 12v to the coil and turning the key to the spring loaded position send 12v to the little tab.
