I seem to recall using 16mm sockets, long (18"+) extensions with a universal joint, and liberal applications of 4 letter words.
I had the car on ramps, and used a jack with wood blocks from below.
But what a difference in the car afterwards! Consider changing your trans mount as well- they are very often separated and collapsed, and you can't tell unless you lift the transmission off the crossmember. Not expensive or difficult though, just usually filthy down there.
