I take it the speedo continues to work even when the odometer does not?
I would try two things, first replacing the entire speedo head with another working one from a junk (or ebay, or IPD classifieds, or here...).
See if the new speedo works fine or acts intermittently. If the new speedo is fine then either leave it in or swap the silver drive motor to your speedo head. I've described this in a few other posts since January.
It requires a little skill with the soldering iron to replace the drive motor, so it's not the kind of job everyone wants to do. It is right in line with the Do-It-Yourself aspect of the Brickboard, however.
If the new speedo is also intermittent, or if other dash problems crop up, I'd guess there's a crack in the circuit board of the instrument cluster, and again use your favorite source for a good used one.
Good luck with it!
