First off, there's nothing wrong with having some difficulty with an early 80's flame trap. On my '88 it was right out in the open, on both the '83 & '85 it's completely buried.
Looking at the engine from the driver's side, there are four intake runners connecting the throttle body and the engine head. The flame trap sits underneath runners 3 and 4 (counting from the front of the car) in a hose atop the oil breather box (which is bolted to the engine block underneath the intake and near the starter). A Bentley Manual is a wise investment, as a picture would describe it much better.
