I think I connected something in the dash wrong... 140-160

Only cluster lights, and one some cars the gearshift illumination would be connected AFTER the rheostat. If there were other wires in the vicinity, they would have been connected to the supply terminal from the lighting switch for the purpose of operating only at night. Example, glove box light or any console illumination.
