Thanks mapleleafer and neil...I have resolved the problem. FYI everyone, the wiring for the glove box DOES NOT connect to the rheostat. That was causing my problem and the heat. The connectors from the glove box actually attach to the back of the clock. They were not originally connected to the clock since the clock does not work and they were just hanging loose so I just assumed they attached to the rheostat. Everything is back in place now and the car is at the Volvo dealer getting the AC serviced. It was all worth the effort. Now the underside of the dash is completely cleaned, along with a new evaporator, new heater core and new heat control valve so hopefully they will go another 30 years and I will not have to ever replace a heater core again.
