These comments are not Volvo specific
You may have sucked water up through the intake causing Hydro Lock.
I would remove the spark plugs and crank the engine around a few times. See if you get water pushing out the Spark plug holes.
The possible bad news.: You said you did get it started. If you had water in the Cylinders it may have caused this hydro lock in which case you may have bent a valve.
You should do a Compression check to see if you bent a valve.
With any luck, you just soaked the ignition and that is why it is running crappy. That doesn't explain the white smoke.
