That's a gorgeous motor. What have you done to it?
So, for the everyday ES, it would seem we have the choice between the head retrofit at about $500 to get back to 130 hp, or $5K plus to go beyond that.
If that's the case, it seems like the rebuilt head would be the way to go. I guess I have to wonder why the dual weber conversion would be so costly - do I assume incorrectly that it would be just two side-draft carbs and a new intake of some kind? What other changes would be required to run the Webers properly? What could you expect in terms of hp if you went with that? I'm sure you're right about the porting (including the cost of it) - suspect that may be the kind of work that the top SCCA or other vintage racing cars might have - but might be hard to find on your everyday driver. (I'm pretty good with my hand-held portable drill but...)
Again, my plan is to use the car as a driver rather than a track car and I would quickly forfeit a small increase in performance for reliability.
When was the B18 discontinued? The car I saw was an S with a "stretched" B18 according to the owner (presumably he had it bored .30 over). Any advantage to using an earlier motor that pre-dated the fuel injection?
Contrary to appearances, I am actually generally keen on keeping things original, but have heard some say that these cars can be made a lot more fun with not too much effort. I just wonder (aloud) if they are down on performance and am really curious about what exactly can be done to improve it if so. To me, the styling of the ES is unbeatable (apologies to the coupe owners!)
Thanks so much for the great info.
