aw70 shifter linkage

The clicks between gear positions are in the transmission. It's kind of a spring-loaded ball slipping into different holes in a plate.

The locks for different locations are in the shifter- that's what the knob does. If the linkage is so far out that the release button is not settling into its proper placement, then the button won't pop up where it should.

This linkage might be just about to fail. I've seen so many rusty ones do exactly what yours did in the January posting. They all fall apart at the end of the rod to the "7" shaped bracket. Many are very loose here, though I'd bet most people never realize how close they are to a failure.

The linkage is one of the things I go after on a parts car before I junk it, if that tells you anything.
