Tom,
I'm not trying to alarm you - just an observation for whatever it's worth. I've got a steel timing gear in one of my B20s and can't hear any difference between that and the other one that has a fiber gear - no whining whats-or-ever. It's a gear set I found in a junkyard B20 block that I later discarded -just kept the mechanical pieces that were still usable.
