Why did Volvo go with the black? My guess is that considering these cars were esentially designed in the 1960s, and production stretched into the *1990s*, it was a way to update the later models with a more modern, streamlined, less antiquated look. I like chrome (real chrome - not painted plastic) on cars, but chrome was not very common in the early 1990s.
Some of the lighter color cars look good with the black trim, I think - white, silver, tan, red. Other colors take the chrome better - black, blue, etc.
I won't do it, but I've thought the Corona wheels would look especially cool painted black with the chrome lug nuts and center caps. Anyone done this or have photos? Maybe worth a separate post down the road.
