I had a similar intermittent problem on my 65. I checked all the wiring, regulator, changed the brushes, cleaned connections, etc. and the problem persisted. I also lightly dressed the commutator with emery cloth. I finally took the generator and regulator to a reputable auto electric place. They bench tested it and found the same intermittent problem with the genny so that was the problem. (Maybe you could spend a few $$ to get your genny bench tested - at least to find out whether it is the problem or whether it is something else?)
They did a complete rebuild (as the problem was the result of a number of things which I cannot remember - sorry I am electrially challanged).
Everything is great - and no generator light. I know others would say that an alternator is the way to go, but decided to stay with the genny as my 220 is very stock, and everything works (lights, fan, wipers, original radio).
