Hi all,
My 1987 740ti has been stalling just after startup. I cleaned the intake air valve, not real bad and changed the distributorcap and rotor. The distributor o-ring was leaking so I pull the dizzy and replace it, not marking it as I wanted to time it properly anyway as it has always accellerated as if the timing was retarded. Well i button her back up and it starts insantly which it didn't before. I time it to 10 degrees BTDC for a rough start. On the test drive, it runs good, but it is even more sluggish off the line. I pull out my trusty 10mm and advance it even more. It is less sluggish but not a huge improvement. So then I advace it all the way the distributor will go, another slight improvement. I didn't bother checking with the timing light where it was. Finally my question, does it seem the PO had installed the timing belt one tooth off? How many degrees or crank rotation does one tooth account for? I have had the car for 25K and it has always been sluggish off the line. Should I re do the timing belt? any other ideas?
