I had a lot of trouble with the ignition on my B18 and power. Eventually gave up on the old distrubutor and frankensteined another. I had power all over the place afterwards with the exception of 1st gear. Turns out my blowby has forced oil out the last seal I didn't replace, the rear, and is all over the flywheel evidenced by a powerful leak out the bellhousing weep hole.
Then I swallowed a few valves. Compression was all over, from 145-125psi with inconsistent wear, not really pointing at anything aside from some valve trouble on 4. I lost both on 4 and the exhaust on 3.
Ignition makes a huge difference, but if you do get the power you're missing; don't skip Blue Horse's advice!
