I have managed to confirm my suspicions regarding the breather hose and the fuel cap. Volvo parts catalog shows that the breather hose was introduced at chassis number 24300 (mine is in the 9000's). At the same time the part number for the filler cap and the rubber seal under the cap changed - presumably to make the cap fully seal. I've added a breather hose and plan to mod the cap to make it seal.
