Never sold in the USA. The 960 and the 940 were available throughout their production run to the rest of the world with manual transmissions.
The 940 used the M47, as NA 740's and 240s did. The 940T used the M46 as our Turbo models and older 240s used. The 960 used a 5-speed called the M90.
There is a great deal of info, and occasional imported parts collections being sold, regularly on Turbobricks.com. A month or so ago we met with a Turbobricks member running an M46 in his 940T sedan. Probably, very few cars have been converted in this country- the supply of conversion parts is small, and there aren't really a lot of 960s to begin with. In addition, the conversion will be rather expensive, with the cost of an imported M90 being probably close to $2000 to get it to your doorstep.
You can find 5-speed late 740, 740T, 740GLE 16-V cars around. They don't sell for any big price difference compared to a similar automatic. I realize they aren't common, but patience will pay off, and sources like Craigslist give you the opportunity to search ads or post a wanted ad in many areas nationally.
I have a 90 745 (8-valve, non-turbo) with the M47. I love it and it drives nicely. It finally needs a clutch, at 272K miles. My wife actually has grabbed it as her everyday car, so I don't get to drive it as often as I'd like, but it's a nice step up from a 240. Feels quicker anyway. I think it's a good option if you're looking for the latest RWD 5-speed car Volvo offered in North America.
