smoking during engine braking, a general answer.... 140-160 1970

Based on my pre-Volvo experience..

During engine braking, the manifold vacuum is quite high. This may allow motor oil to get sucked into the cylinders through a less-than-perfect valve guide.
In other engine circumstances the vacuum is lower and less oil, if any, gets sucked in. Engine performance not usually affected.

What color is the smoke? White? Blue-ish?

Can you replicate the problem in the driveway? Rev up and get off the gas quickly and go see if you can sniff the smoke? Burning oil has a distinctive smell.

Good Luck,

Bob
