I've seperated calipers. No big deal. As long as the o-rings are in good shape there shouldn't be any leaks as they form the seals between the 2 halves.
If I were stuck in the middle of nowhere with a sheet of rubber gasket material (or EPDM? see
http://www.efunda.com/designstandards/oring/oring_chemical.cfm?SM=none&SC=Brake%20Fluid) I'd make the o-rings myself and see if they worked. Even if it didn't work, the brakes won't catastrophically fail. Crazy? Maybe, but you don't scrap a 240 for lack of an o-ring without trying other options first.
