The only reason the engine idled when cold is because I took off the black idle adjustment knob, that kept it at 1K rpm. As soon as the oil warmed up, I put the adjustment knob back on.
I really can't see enough through the spark hole. The valve did not drop all of the way down and have the piston slap up against it. It's just hanging there. It's always possible that the guide failed from lack of oil and is holding the valve in place.
The piece that holds the spring down broke in 1/2, at least half of it is laying next to the valve stem, the other half must be around somewhere. The rocker arm wasn't oily, like on the exhaust rocker. Something else to check.
On Monday, when my expensive mechanic gives me a call, we can do best/worst case scenerios.
I would rather see it run than become a donor car. There is no rust and the original paint still shines.
Bummed,
Klaus
