I actually had this problem with my old aircooled vw bug. There are two fuel filters on those, everyone remembers to change the one in the engine compartment but missed the one coming off the fuel tank. Before I chnaged it was a very simular situation.

Another factor is that here (Dallas) we have the gas mixed with etholnal which I expect will be having a negative affect on certain parts. I didn't look for the date.
