The easy (and entirely practical) way to do it is use just the long block from the 88, if it has the mounting holes for the crank position sensor. Use the manifolds, fuel and ignition systems, and flywheel from the 89. The flywheel has to be properly in time with the crankshaft or it won't run. Don't forget to change the temperature sensor on the head (the one for the injection) They are different. While it's out is a good time to replace all gaskets and seals. Make sure the replacement engine is from a 740. The 240's distributor is in the wrong place.
