O2 sensor; use of 4 wire on 3 wire car

Hi Gary,

Five or six years ago I won a pair of "volvo spark plugs" on e-bay I recognized as new 4-wire sensors. I used one to replace the '89's after it was fouled by a leaky AW-70 tailshaft. Just like you suggested, I grounded it at the firewall to cam cover braid. Works great, and believe me, there's no benefit, or special compensation built in to accommodate the use of the rusty exhaust pipes, bolts, and manifold as a ground reference for that circuit. The four wire configuration can only be an improvement.
