Be SURE your ignition is sufficiently advanced. I use 20°BTDC on all of mine.
If you don't have a timing light yet (be sure and get one) you can turn the
distributor to where it runs the fastest at idle (with everything connected)
and use that unless it knocks, in which case retard it a bit.
Having your ignition retarded greatly reduces power and also makes the engine
(and particularly the exhaust system) run hotter than it should.
