I think the number you're seeing is the one on the front of the speedo.
Cars before anti-lock brakes have numbers approx
- wagons: 9800x
- sedans:1002xx
There's one # for sedans and one for wagons - I just never remember it precisely.
Cars with anti-lock brakes have a different pulse setup to support the brake system, the speedo # is different accordingly.
Cars with standard tranny might be different also - I'm not sure.
The number is basically pulses per kilometer. The wagon and sedan have matching drivetrains - no difference there. But the sedans have larger tires and so the driveshaft revs per km is different.
Never heard of an '87 turbo. Maybe sold outside the USA? Or more likely the donor car had a tach but no turbo.
The other thing to watch for is the variations that began in '89 (I believe) with the auto-clocking of a reminder to get your oil changed. Every 5000 mi. (I believe) it trips the "Service Engine" light. As the years went on there were various buttons and levers to reset the stupid light. One from the same year as your car should be OK. I'm not sure if other years will be OK or not.
