You could always try ( operative word, try ) to find an early 240 diesel , D-20 5 cyl diesel . Same engine minus one cylinder. That ought to solve the size problem.
Not many sold in the states, quite a few were sold in Canada. Basically same as Audi 5000 diesel block , but I'm not sure about the bellhousing bolt up.
