AW71 not working DO I NEED SOLENOID

It's powered all the time EXCEPT when you turn off the relay by pushing the button (which causes the UP arrow light to come on, indicating overdrive is OFF).

When it's activated, you're creating a hydraulic circuit which then the trans uses to decide when it's time to shift in and out of OD. All you can do with the solenoid is defeat it and lock out 4th.

The trans decides, hydraulically, when to shift into 4th. If it won't go, with good power to the solenoid, you have a couple choices.

Try to get another solenoid, new or used. New is of course kind of expensive.

Buy the "OD blockoff plate" from IPD, a $39.95 quick-fix, which will work well if the problem is electrical or in the solenoid itself (they do plug up internally).

If neither of these routes fixes it, it can be inside the transmission, and in that case the news gets worse: the only fix is a good used transmission. It's usually not economical to remove and rebuild these, but some Volvo shops have good old-school transmission experts, so ask their advice. Go to a VOLVO shop, not a TRANSMISSION shop, by the way. Big difference in approach to the problem, I've found.
