Headlight update 444-544

excellent. now, do you still have a generator or have you converted to alternator power yet? And are you 6V or 12V?

If your new lights are going to use say, around 100W of power...by ohms (or some such) law, P = IR, you will roughly be drawing I = 100W/12V = 8.333 amps of current from your charging system. My alternator puts out around 60 amps, so in the grand scheme of things, my system is probably sufficient to power these headlights, as well as everything else. However, if I was still using generator power, I think I would only have around 49 amps total, if I remember right, to power all my accessories. In other words, the new brighter headlights might have put me past the limits of my system before my upgrade.

Be sure to connect these directly to the battery - 10 or 12 gauge thickness wire is probably good enough to handle 8 amps - protect them with an inline fuse, and you'll also need a relay (not sure how you pick one out - so if you find out let me know)(the larger the gauge, the smaller the wire, so 18 gauge is the smallest, and 10 is the beefiest). The general rule of thumb is: smaller than 16 gauge wire shouldn’t be used unless you know its low current. Most of the wiring in our cars is probably 16 or 14 gauge, so you don't want to try to hook up higher current bulbs to existing wire.

(disclaimer: if any of the above is incorrect, hey, what do you expect from a chemist? :P)
