You can get away with 20mm...See more below...

"More importantly, you will NEED at least a 25mm adapter to hide the lug nut so that it recesses into (or inside of) the spacer. The acorn lug that holds the adapter to you Volvo hib is about 22-24 mm tall. Surely, it cant stick out of the adapter."

It can be done with a 20mm adapter. Use basic 1/2"X20 wheel nuts and there won't be a problem. They can protrude provided the new wheels have hollows between the lug holes on the backside of the hub mating surface. Many wheels do...

The only issue I see is as mentioned in my email to you Frank…will the smaller center bore of the wheel allow the end of the front hub through? The rears are fine…
