Consider buying a spare set of new steering column U-joints... they will die again.

As far as the shavings in the resevoir, they could be coming from the rack or the pump, some is normal, but check it again in a few months, if it is full again, think pump and rack impending failure.

Sorry to be so pessimistic, but perhaps an in-line filter between the rack and the pump would be in order. Haven't done this myself, but I've thought about it.
