...in addition to a cable release like the hood uses, designing a solenoid linkage would do it too...but both might be best...if the electrics fail for any reason, the cable would be a back-up...nice to have...

At the risk of sounding mean...generally, when you do a smoothie job on a car, you want to have that sort of thing figured out BEFOREHAND...what if you inadvertently close the trunk while working on it...how would you get it open again?

If you are removing door handles too, for a total smoothie job, this comment applies even more strongly!
