I assume you are using the 122 aluminium inlet manifold. I have done this 2 different ways and of the 2 the first one you are talking about is the cheapest as it is necessary to increase the thickness of the inlet manifold to get the best seal doing it the other way.
In the 1st one you do not have to shave the manifold face where it meets the head, just reduce the thickness on the nut side (ie on the opposite side to the head) at each end where the 2 manifolds are held by the one nut. I am not sure if there there is another position where the 2 are held by the same nut.
I have this arrangement on my 142S and it seems to work well.
