"My question is - I was under the impression that each of the three bolt-holes have a metal tube running the depth of the filter through which the bolt passes. Did you remove those and replace them with this all-thread and tubing and if so, why?"
I cut through the existing tubes that were in the filter.
"Why not just use some tubing with an inner diameter equivalent to the outer diameter of the existing bolt tubing on reassembly?"
That is what I did. Actually I used ferruls that are used when hanging house gutters with spikes. The inside diameter was close to the threaded rod outside diameter so they slipped right over. Obviously had to cut them to length.
Also, if you want to be really cheap, you can sometimes wash even the existing paper filters without tearing them. They really need to be in good shape and not heavilly soiled to go this route though. I have done it on occasion with success.
