Strut Removal tips and tricks, please

I am replacing the strut cartridge (as well as brake pads and rotors, while I'm in there).

The 700/900 FAQs seems to indicate that I can just hit the side of the tie-rod end, and it'll drop down. That's not working for me, so I guess I'll buy the tie-rod "tuning fork". Do these come in specific sizes? Or are they pretty standardized?

regarding the ball joint at the bottom of the strut, do I need to remove that? Can I use the same tool? The 700/900 faqs seems to say that the strut is removed along with the rotor back plate...

I have spring compressors, and I've managed to loosen the bolts at the top of the strut already, as per the instructions in the 700/900 faqs. IPD sells another tool for removing the housing fropm the old strut cartridge, but I figured I could find something similar at the local auto place. Yes?
No?
