Every single one I've ever seen does the same thing. The chrome extension is held onto the actual shifter shaft with a circlip over a rubber bushing. I suppose one could drill through the fat part and fit a pin, but anal types would lose the entertainment of constantly trying to keep the knob oriented properly. ;-)
