I mark the harmonic balancer with a line of white latex across the two pieces. When I open the hood for what ever reason, and remember, I make sure the marks align.

I have not had to replace any yet but I heard the FCPG castings are crude and the spokes may have to be filed down at best if you use the crank hold-down tool. $175 is probably right for the dealer part.
