So I got under the car and discovered a few things. The driveshaft appears to be the problem--it doesn't spin 100% smoothly...rises up and down a bit at the centre support while turning. All of the u-joints move and none have slop, but I think one must be bad. That's one job I've never done...how bad are U-joints to do at home? Clearly I must keep the driveshaft aligned and whatnot.
Concerning the overdrive...I suspect something internal, probably seals going bad. The fluid is full and all connections are good. Maybe I'll try Redline. I'm not going to put too much effort into this car...it is dying from rust. But I want to keep it going as long as possibly for as cheap as possible. Thanks folks.
