Mine crumbled underfoot years ago, leaving me with darkness outside and sparks underfoot. That was an exciting moment in time! (And not in a good 'roller coaster' kind of way, either).
I chose to replace the switch with a 140 style dipper relay under the hood, hooked to the unused 'pull back' switch on the turn signal lever. Remove the wires from the floor dimmer switch, pass that arm of the wiring harness through a grommet and into the engine compartment, locate the unstripped end of the wire from the turn signal switch ((IIRC, a gray wire with the end looped around and tucked back into the harness wrapping) about halfway along the driver's side engine bay, and wire it all up after looking at a 140 wiring diagram for a while.
Now I can flash the headlights during the day by pulling the switch back, and at night it cycles the hi/lo beams.
