Just a thought, but I noticed on an alternator change this weekend that a rough idle condition cleared up on my 88 765(with the 86 B230F motor). My thought at the time was the low voltage at the idle air valve and the ignition was the culprit and the full voltage with the new alternatopr corrected it. It is possible that the your grounding may have developed some resistance over time resulting in a lower voltage at the component level.
The strap on the head is probably to give a more reliable ground than the head to block through the head gasket (or valve cover gasket), and it would reduce potential electrolysis in the aluminum head with the steel bolts passing through.
