You can check for voltage through the coil primary at the minus terminal with the key ON. No voltage there? Check the key switch and wiring. If you've got voltage there, check the black wire down to the Pertronix module for breaks or kinks or touching ground. Make sure the shutter wheel is in place. Make sure the ground wire is connected to the plate of the module. Make sure the red wire leaving the module is connected to voltage when the key is turned ON. Make sure the rotor and cap are OK. That's about it.

If all is well on the primary side you can check the secondary side. Connect your timing light to the high tension lead coming from the coil tower to the distributor cap. Connect a jumper wire to the minus side terminal on the coil and touch and release (make and break) the other end to ground. The timing light should flash each time you do this. If it doesn't, the coil is not working. If it does, the coil is OK but the ignition module is kaput.
