Emiisions Question (lambda sond) and Hood Alignment 200 1984

The hood hinges are one of the few areas of the car that I feel somewhat qualified to comment on.
I also had the same problem on my 1986 240 and had plans on trying to adjust them out.
Now before I had the opportunity to do so, the drivers side hinge actually broke on me one day when shutting the hood so then I was forced to buy a set of new hinges off of Evilbay (I'm sure they are also available at any local junkyard).
Well when I put the new hinges on my car they did need some adjusting done to them. If you look at the hinges you have slotted openings which allow you to move the hood front to back and also down and up (on the side by the windshield). It's really about as simple as it can possibly be but I would suggest getting a helper to hold the hood in place as you loosen the bolts.
In my case I had to lower the hood to the bottom of the slots (a few different times between tests)until I got the right up/down position. After that I measured the gap on each corner of the hood and adjusted the forward/backward adjustment until the gap was exactly the same on each side. Then I went to the front of the hood and adjusted the up/down adjustments on the rubber bumpers so that the hood closed evenly across the front of the car. The only REAL piece of advice I can give you is to make sure you have the grill out of the car before doing anything, in case the hood would lock down because of bad adjustment. That way you can access the locking mechanism much more easily. Also, the spade that locks in on the front of the hood can be screwed in and out for proper latching. This is also an adjustment that needs to be done. I also drew around the hood hinges on both the hood and the fender so that I always had a reference point to go back to. All in all it took about a half hour and now my hood fits perfectly.
If you do have bent hinges I would probably just go to the salvage yard and pull a set of them. Won't take much time to do and the cost should be negligible. Man it feels good to be answering a question other than begging for help. :-)
Hope this information helps you out.
Dave
